My entertainment of the week recommendation is presented by the Lakeland, Florida Harrison School for the Arts – “An Evening of Opera”.

Harrison School for the ArtsThe Harrison Choral Department under the direction of Judy McLaurin and Chad Brady is inviting you to “An Evening of Opera” at 7:30 p.m. on the main state of the Harrison School for the Arts Theater located at 750 Lakeland Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland Florida 33801

The Harrison Chamber Singers will present “One False Move,” a modern opera by Susan Kander. Set in a high school, “One False Move” is based on the troublesome issues of girl bullying between two girls, Amy and Bonnie, The junior and senior women will bring to life this powerful drama through songs.

After intermission, the audience will be treated by these talented soloists and small ensembles performing repertoire such as:

  • Marriage of Figaro
  • Tales of Hoffman
  • Magic Flute
  • Madame Butterfly

Harrison Singers will sing the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from “Nabucco,” The Bridal Chorus from “Lohengrin,” and the Bell Chorus from “I Pagliacci.”

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.harrisonarts.com and will include a nominal merchant fee. Remember to bring your e-ticket to the event. Tickets are available at the door one hour prior to performance.

It never seizes to amaze me by the impeccable talents and art rich programs Lakeland Florida has to offer. Lakeland Community Theatre is pleased to present “Oliver!,” one of the most beloved musicals of all time, which vividly brings to life Charles Dickens‘ timeless characters with its ever-popular story of the boy who asked for more. “Oliver!” was the first Dickens work to be presented as a stage musical and is the classic story of the boy who runs away from an orphanage and joins a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by an elderly mentor. The sensational score is full of Lionel Bart’s irresistible songs, including Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, Oompah-pah, As Long As He Needs Me and many more.

Directed by Debi Morgan, the cast of over 60 includes this very talented group: Kris Brock as Oliver, Benedict Heaps as Dodger, Joe Strickland III as Fagin, Jaclyn Susa as Nancy, John Hatfield as Bill Sykes, Tom Mook as Mr. Bumble, Judy Smith as Widow Corney, Ed Frisbie as Mr. Sowerberry and Mr. Brownlow, Renee Reid as Mrs. Sowerberry, Sydney Watkins as Charlotte, Kawon Hunter as Noah, Laura Modrall as Bet, Allison Gibbes as Mrs. Bedwin, Seth Cox as Dr. Grimwig and Tammy Serebrin as Old Sally.
